Tiji Festival Trek

Destination: Mustang/Annapurna
Duration : 20 days
Best Season : May-Jun

Grade : Moderate
Max. Altitude : 4120m

Mustang is an area of Nepal that was once known as the Kingdom of Lo, bordering Tibet on the central Asian plateau. Trekking through the upper Mustang brings you into a hidden world where Tibetan buddhism is still practiced in its pure form, and villages are built in Tibetan style; a place where life continues as it has for centuries. As with everywhere in the Himalayas this region provides spectacular mountain scenery, highlighted by Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri. The Tiji festival is celebrated over three days and is one of the most important festivals of the region. It involves a long ritual known as “The Chasing of Demons”, whereby the monks dress in elaborate costumes and masks and perform dances and rituals in order to drive away evil spirits. Trekking through the upper Mustang during festival time creates a fascinating fusion of adventure and culture.

This area was only opened to trekkers n 1992 and foreigners require a government issued permit before entering.
