Makalu Base Camp Trek

Destination: Makalu-Barun
Duration : 20 days
Best Season : Mar-May; Sep-Dec

Grade : Strenuous
Max. Altitude : 5100m

This trek takes you to the base camp of the fifth highest mountain in the world, Mt Makalu (8463 m), which stands between its giant neighbours Kanchenjunga to the east and Everest to the west. This is a challenging and difficult trek through one of the more remote areas of Nepal, and gives you the opportunity to experience truly unspoilt Himalayan landscape. From Kathmandu you will travel to the base of the Arun River at Tumlingtar to begin the journey and from there, through and beyond the Arun Valley into higher alpine areas. Before entering the upper Makalu/Arun valley you will travel over the Shipton Pass towards base camp. From here you will have breathtaking views of ice lakes, the south face of Makalu, Mt Varantsu, the Everest ridge, Lhotse and other peaks. This trek requires a high level of fitness and some experience trekking at high altitude.
